It's a world where princesses and knights fight witches and dragons. It's a world with dozens of small kingdoms, giants, and dark, magical forests. And from this world comes an unnamed girl, wearing spider silk, on her way to join Pennyroyal Academy.M. A. Larson, the author, has demonstrated his creativity in many cartoons, but this is his first novel. And his background occasionally shows. Aside from Evie, many other characters are flat: either generically nice (Magdalena, Rumpledshirtsleeves) or functional (the Fairy Drillsergeant) or otherwise. (The exceptions I'd rather not name, to keep this review spoiler-free.) The shortcuts that work for twenty-two minute cartoons don't work so well in novels.On the other hand, his prose style matches the nineteenth century Grimm's tales translations, with flowing sentences and luscious detail. His locations, even the crumbling towers and abandoned towns, are richly described.In short, it's a fun book, and a good start to a series. I just finished reading it and we found time to read some chapters together. We couldn't put it down!. Great adventure! Love the characters, their trials, their choices and the lessons they learn along the way! Even my 7 year old son enjoyed listening to me read some chapters aloud. Awesome villains! Hope there's a series of these books. We will buy the next one as soon as has it available! My girls and I decided we would re-read it together this next week, now that we know the surprise ending, we want to go back and put it all into context and enjoy the adventure again! Blood restrictions lifted–Come one, come all!”Oddly enough Reese Witherspoon suggested this book and after reading the synopsis, I decided I’d give it a go. Imagine Harry Potter meets classic fairy tale. In lieu of wizards, we have boys and girls attending the Pennyroyal Academy to eventually become knights and princesses under the direction of unique instructors such as Fairy Drillsergeant and Rumpledshirtsleeves.Our main character, a nameless girl, is on a journey to find the princess, whom was on a flyer, that declared, “Pennyroyal Academy. Seeking bold, courageous youths to become tomorrow’s princesses and knights. Blood restrictions lifted–Come one, come all!” On her journey she meets Remington who is traveling to the academy to become a knight. We follow the nameless girl throughout her internal and external conflicts whilst the author places meaningful, life-lesson quotes for the young adults who are her audience, yes that doesn’t include me.M.A. Larson created querky, but lovable characters, one being Basil, the 22nd and youngest son whom his mother sent to the academy to become a princess, because she had always hoped for a girl. This novel is fairly brief and an easy read that conveys courage for the boys and girls who battle witches and dragons throughout the book. Larson provided an interesting twist in the thick of the book that you won’t want to miss nor will you see coming!I appreciate when I read a YA novel that it is appropriately written for the category YA. I’ve read some books that are deemed in the same genre, but I blush at some of the content as an adult. Pennyroyal Academy is a great balance of young love and the individual journey boys and girls take into adulthood. Some examples of great quotes are:“I couldn’t do a thing about the way they treated me, but I got to choose the way I treated them.”“You are not a victim in this world unless you choose to be.”“Courage cannot coexist with self-doubt!”I could go on and on, I have notes all over this book of great quotes one after another.See all 67 customer reviews...
