His sources include diaries of German foot soldiers up to generals who provide vivid details of what happens when someone gets run over by a tank or gets directly hit by an artillery shell. It is a fascinating read.As the German's saw it, they never had a chance largely because the Luftwaffe had already been wiped out. During every battle they bitterly lament that their air support is a no show. They became the victims of a turkey shoot. They were also badly out generalled. Promises from headquarters that help was on its way never amounted to anything.Fascinating insights into Rommel and successors in defeat who did what they could to hold the line are provided. German soldiers and the high command considered that it was a battle between heroes (represented by the Germans) and "material" (represented by the Allies). German soldiers who participated in massacres of unarmed civilian populations in Poland and Eastern Europe, in the early days of the war just felt it was so unfair to be strafed by fighter planes. They kept hoping for a time out.The descriptions of each battle and the fall of each City to the Allied onslaught tends to be repetitive. The reader is left with the impression that to go through one saturation bombing is enough.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Good Human PerspectiveBy JimFoxyI enjoyed the book overall. The contribution most significant, it seems to me, is the publication of letters from ordinary soldiers. These added a human dimension to the accounts of the Normandy invasion and the fighting in France. My only disappointment was that nothing that I saw was actually new. Most other accounts that I have read included documents from the German perspective, and these gave a fairly complete view of the German side of things. I have read some excellent works focused on the Luftwaffe which were revealing and gave a great insight into the minds of German fighter pilots. I had hoped this work to be similarly revealing, but did not find it so. Perhaps I expected too much. This is not to be over-critical of Hargreaves' account. It was interesting and readable and I did enjoy it. But it does not rise to the 5-star level.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful.there was a significant amount of reiteration of the core theme that the German soldier was superior and only allied material suBy Joseph PaulchellThis book provided a interesting and detailed description of the German perspective on the battle of Normandy. I found most of it to be very interesting and enlightening. However, there was a significant amount of reiteration of the core theme that the German soldier was superior and only allied material superiority was responsible for the victory. I think that this is a gross oversimplification in belittles the enormous contributions of the Allied soldiers. In addition there's a number of views presented on the support of the German public and soldiers for the effort in Normandy. The support for these views are based on soldier letters and interviews conducted by the German police on the streets. However, there is no corresponding indication that these accounts may have been skewed or biased based on fear of the Gestapo or fear of reprisal's in expressing negative opinion. So reader, beware of the view that the German public was holy in support of them believed in victory in Normandy. If you take this one grain of salt, then the rest of the book is an enlightening read into the horrors the German soldier faced in Normandy and the overwhelming odds against his success. Overall a worthwhile presentation of an alternate perspective.See all 564 customer reviews...
