To be clear, while I have a lot more complaints than compliments about this book, the compliment is bigger and more central. That said, let's get the compaints out of the way first. The time-travel system here is murky and never fully developed, with no logic to it. It's not clear why Simon is pulled into the past, why he couldn't just return to the future (there's some implication that there's just too much to do in the past, but several of the crises within the book could be solved by a quick trip to the future and back). Professor Ananke can clearly travel to a precise time and place so presumably Simon can too.Grant clearly knows her history well in terms of great events, but it doesn't seem like she has that clear an understanding of daily life and how different it was from modern life. For instance, people in the story seem to wash and bathe a lot more than my understanding of the times would indicate. Everyone communicates in modern English including words like OK. whereas in reality they'd probably be speaking either French or a Middle English that would sound like a foreign language to Simon - he'd probably have had to resort to Latin to communicate at all. While there were powerful women at the time, I have some trouble believing that a girl in her early teens would be trusted to take the place of the lord of a manor.I find it hard to believe a boy with some desultory training in modern fencing could beat one who had trained to be a knight from early childhood, and I'm not convinced a foil forged by a village smith would turn aside a broadsword without shattering. Finally, proofreading would be nice - there's a glitch every few pages. On the good side, the best part of the book is the historical plot, which kept me reading. The fictional elements of the history fit nicely into the relationships between Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and other major figures of the day and kept the suspense going.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. The Time Traveler's ApprenticeBy A Cat and a BookThis book is about a boy named Simon who is able to travel through time thanks to his association with a professor at a museum. At the start of the story, he is unexpectedly thrown back in time to medieval England, where he meets a girl named Bryn and agrees to help her solve a murder mystery.Based on the synopsis and some of the reviews, I was expecting the story to start out with Simon meeting Professor Ananke and discovering her secret. That wasn't the case at all--he had been working with her for a while and had time traveled a few times before the story began. It almost felt like I was stepping into the second book of a series because of that, but I was able to get through it and keep reading. The book was set during one of my favorite time periods, which is always a plus. I thought the plot itself was interesting. The story is definitely more historical fiction than science fiction (time travel doesn't happen often and isn't really explained), but I was fine with that and hope the series continues in the same manner. I wouldn't mind seeing at least one trip to the future though, if possible with the way time travel works here!I liked most of the characters in the story. It was told from three different characters' points of view, but thankfully there was never any confusion over who was in charge of each chapter. I will admit that I had to force myself to read some of Professor Anake's chapters. She seemed like a cool person, but I never connected with her at all, and I got really annoyed with her at one point because of the way she treated another character (a librarian). On the other hand, I was very interested in what was happening to Simon and Bryn. I liked them both a lot, though there were some inconsistencies in their characters. For example, I found it very odd that Bryn never asked Simon any questions about the future or time travel, especially given her otherwise curious nature. I kept expecting her to bring it up, but she never did.I also felt like the author tried too hard to make the story educational and ended up going overboard with historical facts. All of the characters were prone to unnecessary, unnatural and sometimes lengthy info-dumps. They also thought/talked to themselves in a very unusual way. I found those things jarring at times, and they pulled me out the story. I hope that will improve in the next book.I was also disappointed with one aspect of the ending, though I don't want to say what because it would be a spoiler. Oh, okay (SPOILER ALERT!!!): let's just say I really hope there won't be a different love interest in each book of the series. All in all, I have mixed feelings about this book, and I would have rated it 3.5 stars if possible. I had a hard time getting into the story at first, but I was definitely into it by the end. The storyline was good and most of the characters were likeable, but the writing wasn't quite right and the ending was a bit of a let-down.I would recommend this book to fans of historical fiction. I will definitely buy the next book when it comes out, and I hope it will be out soon. I guess you could say I'm not completely hooked on this series just yet, but I liked it enough to read at least one more book.21 of 21 people found the following review helpful.Fun and EducationalBy BookloverI read this book before sending it to my grandson and was happy to do so. Not only would it give him a fun book to read, it also would be educational at the same time. I was so happy to learn that he was thoroughly enjoying it--and this from a boy who did not care to read all that much. I would look forward to the author's second book--and, of course, I would read it before sending it on.See all 93 customer reviews...
