I am a big fan. Just not this time.As said by others, this is a meeting of Venture Brothers and HBO. Its all very tongue in cheek with many homages to Hardy Boys, Johnny Quest, and the other absurd teen duo series. There's also a Mythos tie-in as well (I would not call it cosmic horror).It is campy and revels in its campiness.I did not like it.The antagonists are so young that their bad boy sexual exploits, boozing, and drugs are comedic. The dialog so bloated that it doesn't read like conversation but lists of slang from media of bygone ages. I know the intention was pulpy nostalgia, but it was not for me.I knew what I was getting into based on previous reviews, and intended to support a writer I enjoy.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Barron is backBy T. DominyIf I wanted to be hypercritical, I would give this novella 3 out of 5 stars instead of 4. However, the concept is just too wild and fun and so my inner noir/pulp geek won out. The demerit would come because the overall plot is a bit obscure- this feels like only the first of at least three complete "books" in a cycle. But the bottom line is that the Tooms brothers must outwit arcane, superhuman and possibly alien enemies as well as their own straight-up super-villainous family in order to survive. Barron combines elements from Golden Age pulp, EC Comics, Mickey Spillane, even old Popular Mechanics future-speculation and folds it all smoothly into his own sprawling, growing Mythos. "X's" is imminently weird, crassly nihilistic, bloodily violent, smugly sarcastic and occasionally disturbing: everything a Barron fan could want. Though they're sociopaths and being groomed to become world-class assassins and (maybe worse) captains of the American Military-Industrial Complex in a post-Doc Savage Cold War era, you find yourself rooting for the Tooms brothers to best their various despicable enemies. The ending certainly left me with more questions than answers and arrived far too soon, but I enjoyed the hell out of the ride and look forward to another turn. Recommended for fans of: Pulp, Silver Age comics, James Bond and/or Doc Savage, Quentin Tarantino and Stuart Gordon, and (most specifically) The Venture Brothers (in fact, I often found myself thinking this was effectively an NC-17 version of VB.)1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Oddball pastiche of Jonny Quest and the Cthulhu mythos.By Peter S. BradleyOther reviewers have mentioned the "Jonny Quest" aspect of this book. That element gives this book a lot of its charm, but it is Jonny Quest with a dark side.Mac and Dredd Tooms are 12 and 14 and they belong to the secretive, elitist, mysterious Tooms family which runs one of the wealthiest corporations in the world. The boys are back for a summer vacation at a Tibetan monastery where they are being trained in martial arts and assassinations and they get involved in a secret rocket ship launch to Pluto, which is odd because the story is set in the mid-1950s. The technology available to the boys also includes artificial intelligence crystals. The boys are precocious beyond their years, consorting with hookers and being oblivious to the body count that piles up among their friends. Their adventure takes them into the Cthulhu mythos and a very disturbing discovery about their family.The story is actually the first part of a longer project.I enjoyed the story. I thought it moved at a nice clip. I thought it might make a decent YA for boys if the part about the hookers was left out. It certainly is an odd one in terms of genre, and if adolescents who might end up as human sacrifices is not inside your comfort zone, give it a miss.See all 72 customer reviews...
