But it isn't a plague book. It is a story about nine people trying to outrun the plague , but they are dogged by some unknown menace that keeps them moving with more urgency than fears of the plague. If you've read other reviews, you know that each has a secret to keep hidden; ultimately, this is what the story is about. The book is filled with the ethos of the times, the prejudices, the fears, the superstitions, the strange things people believed caused disease, as well as how people lived, in the protection of towns or rough roaming, like our nine. The ending is astonishing. I won't say more.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Real Page Turner, But Not For FundamentalistsBy PepperBefore I begin my review, I'd like to give a warning. This book is NOT for fundamentalist religious folk. Without giving things away, it features sexual relationships that fundamentalists shun. It's full of superstition, the supernatural, and spell-casting. Priests are depicted as the enemies, and the main characters have faltering faith, at best. This is a fantastic book, but I imagine there are people out there who are likely to take offense to the subject material, so in the interest of preventing more negative reviews on what is a great book, I make this warning.I don't usually read this genre, but I'm starting to grow more attached to it thanks to books like this. The world that Maitland painted was (for me) very believable and intriguing. Even the inclusion of "magic" seemed to fit well within the context of the book.I must admit that when I first started to read this book, I thought I wasn't going to enjoy it. The first chapter reads differently to the prologue (what comes with the free sample), and in my opinion was bordering on amateurish. But Maitland does such a fantastic job of keeping you turning the pages ("I'll read just one more section...") that I soon became intrigued with the story and its characters. Honestly I can't say I liked the main character, which is usually a deal-breaker, but I was won over.As the description states, this book is set during the time of the Black Plague. The plague (or "Pestilence" as it's referred to in the book) serves as a constant threat for the main characters, and the cause of numerous obstacles, but it is not what the book is *about*. The book is strongly about the characters, their backgrounds, their personality conflicts, and their goals. In the same way "The Walking Dead" is not *about* zombies, Company of Liars is not *about* the plague.Read this book if you like dark tales set in an realistically dirty and depressing environment, with a hint of the supernatural. The ending could have been stronger, which is why I docked a star, but this book is definitely worth a read.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.excellent mystery - bad trade for meBy ertemisiThe actual book Company of Liars is over 400 pages. An excellent mystery cum history cum philosophy set in the Middle Ages. I read it by borrowing it from the local public librarybecause what I received from was an extract which covered a very small part of the novel. Nowhere in the ad for it was it indicated that it was not the complete book. I was very disappointed.Karen Maitland knows her Middle Ages and makes you feel as if you are living at the time. The overwhelming darkness, it was a time 'lit only by fire', superstitions and povertyof the ordinary peasant made life truly short and brutish. A group of people joined by chance make their way towards a common destination, barely getting by, always plagued by hungerand passing the time by telling stories in the evening. One by one they begin to die on the road. Is it witchcraft as the narrator claims Is what happens simply natural events Or is one of thema killer The characters are fully drawn and in the miasma of ignorance which surrounds them believable.I could not read it fast enough, fascinated by the minutiae of medieval life and curious to know how things would resolve. I recommend it highly. Make sure that the book you are gettingis the the full editionSee all 135 customer reviews...
