His corporate jets, limos, estates, shooting lodges, boozy billionaire mates, their bimbo daughters, his trophy wife and under funded and overdeveloped latest property ventures are all getting too much for him.Sub-plotted around him and his dilemma are a coterie of politicians worrying about what politicians worry about-will they still have a job next election. Add disgruntled $100,000 pa plus bonuses corporate employees, feeling underpaid and wishing they were our central character, but prepared to strip him naked if they get the chance.The grit in the oyster is a black super star footballer with a rape charge hanging over himPut it all together and you get a ripping yarn that will pass the time in the air or on the ground.Buy it.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Events, Dear Boy, EventsBy S RiazI love diaries and this is a wonderful, entertaining and well edited volume of diary entries from 1921 to the modern age. In these days of blogs and tweets, it is interesting to read what people confided to a diary, which they may have thought would be read only by them alone, or have an eye to publishing at some point, and which describes both public events and private emotions. Some of the diary entries go on throughout the book, others only for a few years, and the writers include Beatrice Webb, Leo Amery, Harold Nicolson, Alfred Duff Cooper, Violet Bonham Carter, Virginia Woolf, Evelyn Waugh, George Orwell, Michael Foot, Michael Palin, Kenneth Tynan and Alan Clark, among others. These were people who were heavily involved with the political or cultural life of a country and emcompass many different points of view.The editor has linked the entries through different time periods: 1921-1931, 1932-1940, 1940-1945, 1945-1951, 1951-1962, 1953-1972, 1972-1982, 1982-1990, 1990-1997, 1997-2007 and 2007-2010. Each time period obviously had their own major events, whether it was the depression, the Spanish Civil War, the abdication, the build up to WWII, the war itself, the Falklands, Thatcher, New Labour and, it is fair to say, that just about any political or social event you can think of is covered in this book. It is not just a political diary, but the diary of a country and how it reacts to what happens around the world. My personal favourite period is that from 1921 to the end of the war, which is a time of tumultuous events, such as the rise of facism in Europe. Diary entries change from Harold Nicolson admitting that "under this system you can attain a degree of energy and efficiency not reached in our own island," when visiting Rome, to the realisation of what was really happening in Europe and that England could not stay out of the war.Many of these entries are historically fascinating and it is incredible to read of people who were with Churchill during the war - Churchill's reactions to the doctor allocated to him are simply hysterical. Others are fairly laid back, such as Alexander Cadogan describing London as being, "rather noisy" during the blitz and many are brutally descriptive - Harold Nicolson describing Chamberlain as having "the mind and manner of a clothes brush" for example. Other entries are not world changing, but illuminating all the same. One example is the sense of fair play shown during a fete held during WWII, when people were quite happy to throw things at an effigy of Hitler, but shied away from hurling missiles at Mussolini as, "he was down and out..." You read of Harold Macmillan mentioning one of his ministers getting into a "silly scrape" before realising the minister is Jack Profumo, snigger at Alan Clark calling Norman Tebbitt "as thick as a plank" and wonder 'what if' when Malcomn Muggeridge mentions seeing an unknown Liverpool rock and roll group in a Hamburg club... Overall, this is an excellent collection, which can either be dipped into or read in one gulp, but will be enjoyed either way. An entertaining, witty and fascinating glimpse into a past time and the political life of a country.
