It is not a Penguin Classic. It lacks any publisher information. Also, note the dimensions in the description and you will find that it is more the size of a workbook.I will return mine and buy the normal sized, Penguin Classic.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful.A good book- but something was missing.By SherryThis book was full of big literary words and complex descriptions. One could really learn something about writing from reading this book. The actual storyline is another thing, however.I had great heart for the love story in the beginning of this book. It was captivating and interesting, though I felt like it had been undermined in detail and voice. It ended abruptly and instead turned to Heathcliff's progression into lonely violence and longing. I felt as though the book focused on the wrong characters- Heathcliff should have definitely of had more page time. The love story between Heathcliff's son and Catherine's daughter is a replay of their parent's once vibrant love, but had fallen apart just like theirs had. It gives the reader the feeling that the inability to relate and understand each other is rooted in their genes, so the two families might never find true love despite their passion.I debated whether or not to consider this book 'on my shelf' (would read again) or not. Through the whole story, I felt like something was missing. I could not decipher what. The author seemed to have been holding back on something in the beginning but the plot had gone wayward from her original idea, and she was no longer able to express it. This alone prevents me from giving it five stars and leaving it 'off my shelf'.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It stands the test of timeBy M. S. CasillI had not read this book until I was a wife and had children. Like a lot of people, my education had given me a dislike for literary works termed "classics." Even today, I am sure this book is called a classic love story; what a misnomer, or rather, what a watered down idea we have today of what a love story can be.Jane Eyre is an orphan; the first thing I liked about the book was that her childish daily life, with a group of relatives by marriage who frankly don't want her or find her interesting, is accurately portrayed. They are mean and stupid children and a hard, bitter adult, and Jane serves as a scapegoat and recipient of all their bad feeling. Oh dear! This doesn't sound like a book to recommend, and yet it assuredly *is* ... none of the writing is pathetic or seeks tears from the reader, it is a necessary foundation for Jane's character. She is sent away to a charity school; again, it's not a warm and fuzzy place, but she grows into a couple of friendships that ground her and begin to refine her. There's a good deal in here about the choices we make. I saw this book as written so as to clearly explain all of Jane's choices, even the ones she isn't proud of. As her circumstances gradually and teally only slightly improve, she uses her experiences to teach herself about life. She begins to long to get away from her isolated ordered life, to see more of the world. She advertises and accepts a position as a governess. It's another lonely place, near a small village far out in the country, but it's new, it's seemingly less isolated. The rest of the story is familiar to most, but here is where I found the writer's skill most evident.Jane Eyre, who tells us her own story, has perhaps not experienced very much but she has thought a great deal, and has read as widely as possible. She draws and paints, largely from her imagination, and takes days to complete her works. The descriptions of the works are themselves lovely. Bronte's abilities to draw pictures with her words are excellent. Thus comes Jane's adult life, beginning as a governess at Thornfield Hall! I found this half of the book so well written, so understandable even these centuries later, that I can't help recommending it to any student of human nature. There are indeed some descriptions of moments that seem to be of the "Gentle Reader, my feelings at this time were too agitated to admit of one word escaping my lips" sort, but generally, even the most emotionally charged moments are moving the story forward. She is physically tiny and sounds frail, but mentally Jane is a tough little girl and a strong-willed young lady, well able to make her mind up and keep to a decision, and I admired her for her strength of will. She admits honestly that she is eager for approval, as are we all, if we're honest, but having decided certain things in the calm of her life, she finds herself guided through storms and floods of emotion by the decisions she made before. "This I value, this will I hold to" keeps her on the path for her life.I imagine certain readers will notice a good number of references to Jane and others turning to God. These scenes also have the ring of truth.Highly recommended.See all 4755 customer reviews...
