It's just a real downer more than anything. It feels like a big laundry list of complaints. I've read a ton of literature on the subject and I think you can be honest and fourth coming about the negatives in a much more encouraging way. I also thought most of the information was very subjective and the sources were unreliable. Advice is nice I guess but just because you've adopted and parented doesn't mean you are good at it necessarily. I want a little more than that to find your advice worth paying for.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful.Excellent- a MUST read!By StaceyMy husband and I are looking to adopt siblings in foster care. I am a social worker and have worked in foster care, and we have spoken with many people who have adopted. THis book is excellent! It outlines many details that we have heard from other adoptive parents, goes into depth about behaviors I have seen in foster children, and is a helpful assistant as we await placement with our kids.I was worried that the book, like most self-help books, would have a few interesting points, but be redundant and drone on. This book has SO many different topics that flow so neatly together- I am learning so much! It is definitely something I will continue to use as a reference. Despite the book being published in 1999, it is not out of date! I find myself reading this book as intimately as a novel!4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An excellent adoption resource!By Laura CoenMy husband and I have adopted 6 children and are in the process of a 7th. We also have 5 children by birth. This book, without a doubt, is one of the best I've read for the practical, day-to-day side of the adoption of older children coming from foster care. It was an honest yet hopeful look at what to expect when the child you are trying to love as your own comes with history. There are great perspectives on behaviors, there are practical tips to solve problems, there are honest expressions of frustration, there are beautiful stories of triump. It is less technical than many other books, as it is written from the perspective of the parents (and many parents were interviewed as the basis of the book). Though it includes information from the professionals, the book highlights true stories and experiences from real families. It is the book I would have written if I had the time or the talent. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone working with foster children, interested in adopting an older child or even someone who has already adopted. There is a whole community of support available right here.See all 37 customer reviews...
