The action is unrelenting, with one action scene after another as Mike Ironwood, a former Vietnam vet and current private investigator, slugs/shoots/barges his way through one encounter after another, aided by his half brother, a Native American named Daniel, and in Oregon at least by his almost human dog Bucket. These characters are all compelling and the plot has enough twists and turns to keep the reader turning pages to find out how Mike survives each brush with disaster. One hopes that this is the beginning of a series for these characters certainly deserve more than one book. I highly recommend this author and look forward to reading more of his work.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Interesting characters and a swift moving plot!By DebraI enjoyed this book very much. I cared about the interesting principle characters and just a few chapters in began to hope there might be a series to come. I feel the author is very skilled at description, as well as weaving interesting bits of information that fit well with changing locations, bits of natural history and Native American spirituality and lore-- but never with a heavy hand. The plot development moved along expertly and the compelling changes in action and scenery had me turning the pages faster and faster. I thought this was a very well-told story and it would not have occurred to me that this was an author's debut novel. The writing was solid and expressed the quality of experience.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.A good absorbing readBy Wallis R. PereiraI really liked this story. I read a lot of suspense and non-fiction. I was impressed that Jim held my interest enough to have me wanting to read the story rather than say watch TV. The action moves around the west from Oregon into Mexico. The characters are believable and the how the back stories intersect the story line was well done. Remarkable coincidences are a stock of this trade so it's fine in this case. I know Jim so anything other than an honest review would be unwelcome.See all 29 customer reviews...
